Woman with vibrant, well-maintained hair color

You've just left the salon with gorgeous, vibrant hair color. But how do you keep it looking salon-fresh between visits? At John Douglas Salon in Cypress, CA, we want your color to last as long as possible. Here are our top tips for maintaining your hair color at home.

Wait to Wash

After your color appointment, wait at least 48-72 hours before your first wash. This gives the color molecules time to fully penetrate and bond with your hair cuticle, resulting in longer-lasting color.

Use Color-Safe Products

Not all shampoos and conditioners are created equal. Look for products that are:

  • Sulfate-free: Sulfates strip color quickly
  • Color-depositing: Some shampoos add color pigments back
  • pH-balanced: Keeps the hair cuticle closed
  • Moisturizing: Hydrated hair holds color better

Wash Less Frequently

Every time you wash your hair, you wash out a little bit of color. Try to extend time between washes to every 2-3 days. Use dry shampoo between washes to keep hair fresh without fading your color.

Turn Down the Heat

Hot water opens the hair cuticle, allowing color to escape. Wash and rinse with lukewarm or cool water to keep your cuticle sealed and your color locked in. A final cold rinse adds extra shine!

Protect from the Sun

Just like your skin, your hair can be damaged by UV rays. Sun exposure causes color fading and brassiness. Protect your color by:

  • Wearing a hat when outdoors for extended periods
  • Using UV-protective hair products
  • Avoiding prolonged sun exposure after fresh color

Limit Heat Styling

Flat irons, curling irons, and blow dryers can all accelerate color fading. When you do use heat:

  • Always use a heat protectant spray
  • Keep temperatures moderate (under 350 degrees F when possible)
  • Let hair air-dry partially before blow-drying

Deep Condition Weekly

Colored hair needs extra moisture. A weekly deep conditioning treatment keeps your hair hydrated, healthy, and better able to hold onto color. Look for masks specifically formulated for color-treated hair.

Avoid Chlorine

Pool water can wreak havoc on hair color, especially blonde shades that can turn green. Before swimming:

  • Wet hair with clean water first
  • Apply a leave-in conditioner or coconut oil
  • Wear a swim cap when possible
  • Rinse immediately after swimming

Touch Up at Home (Carefully)

For root touch-ups between appointments, consider color-depositing products like root cover sprays or color-depositing conditioners. These are temporary solutions that wash out, so they won't interfere with your next salon appointment.

Schedule Regular Appointments

The best way to maintain gorgeous color is with regular salon visits. For most clients, we recommend:

  • Root touch-ups: Every 4-6 weeks
  • Full color: Every 6-8 weeks
  • Toner refresh: Every 4-6 weeks for blondes
